American Advertising Awards

Hosted by the American Advertising Federation, the American Advertising Awards, (formerly known as the ADDYs), honor excellence in advertising and cultivates the highest creative standards in the industry. With 60,000 entries, the American Advertising Awards are the nation’s largest advertising competition.

The competition begins at the local level with over 200 AAF member clubs around the country. The local winners proceed to district competitions, and those winners proceed to the national finals.

Proceeds from the American Advertising Awards program, on all levels of competition, go back into the industry through the work of the AAF and its members, especially in the areas of advertising education and public service advertising.

The American Advertising Awards represent the true spirit of creative excellence by recognizing all forms of advertising from media of all types, creative by all sizes and entrants of all levels from anywhere in the world.

The 2017 American Advertising Awards Banquet was held on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at the Trails Banquet Facility. Plans for the 2018 banquet will begin in early fall of 2017.

Special AAF-NCI Members Recognized

This year, the AAF‐NCI recognized members who have achieved and/or contributed much to the organization, their careers, and the Greater Lafayette community.

Lifetime Achievement Award

The Silver Medal Award recognizes lifetime achievement in the marketing, advertising, and public relations industry. Criteria for this award are career recognition, duty to community, dedication and involvement in AAF‐NCI, and the spirit of career accomplishment. This year’s recipient is Angie Klink.

Klink is the author of three books published by Purdue University Press: The Deans’ Bible: Five Purdue Women and Their quest for Equality, released March 2014; Kirby’s Way: How Kirby and Caroline Risk Built their Company on Kitchen‐Table Values, published 2012; and Divided Paths, Common Ground: The Story of Mary Matthews and Lella Gaddis, Pioneering Purdue Women Who Introduced Science into the Home, published 2011.

Klink was the scriptwriter for the award‐winning public education documentary Rise Above the Mark, narrated by Peter Coyote. It was an Official Selection in the 2014 Gutsy Gals Film Award competition. Deborah Hutchison, President and Founder of Gutsy Gals Inspire Me said, “Your film has helped to support our mission of promoting talented women writers and directors of film, and putting women’s creative vision front‐and‐center in today’s contemporary media.”

She authored the children’s books Purdue Pete Finds His Hammer and I Found U and is published in four titles for the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. She has been credited in winning fifty‐two American Advertising Federation ADDY Awards ranging from writing radio/TV scripts; annual reports; ad copy; brochures; event scripts; and the series of holiday cards for Lafayette Printing. She was awarded an honorable mention in the 2007 Erma Bombeck Writers’ Competition and has attended the Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop on five occasions.

Aside from her busy writing career, she has been involved in the Tippeconnect Professional Mentorship program, the Indiana Holiday Author Fair, the Association of Writers and Writing Programs, the Women’s Ink Writing Group and the American Advertising Federation. She has donated her talents to the YWCA Cancer Center Point 1K, AAF’s service projects for Lafayette Transitional Housing and Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and the Historic Ninth Street Hill Neighborhood’s various publications.

Klink holds a BA from the Brian Lamb School of Communication at Purdue University and lives in Lafayette, Indiana, with her husband, two sons, and rescue dog, Chloe.

Rising Star Award

The Rising Star award is presented to an up‐and‐coming young professional in the marketing and advertising industry. This year’s winner is Angela Petrie.

A graduate of Purdue University in communications, Petrie has devoted many volunteer hours as a mentor and advisor with the National Student Advertising Competition at Purdue. As an undergraduate, she was vice president, president and on the presenting NSAC teams representing Purdue University for four years. She was also the Social Media and Branding intern with Purdue CCO which landed her a job as Content Strategist after graduation.

In August 2014 she was hired as marketing director for HotBox Pizza in West Lafayette where she later became social media manager, a position she still holds today part‐time. In November of 2014, she became a multimedia writer for Purdue Marketing and Media where she develops strategic communications for various clients at Purdue.

Currently she sits on the board of the American Advertising Federation for North Central Indiana as communication chair and is the advisor for the Purdue AAF Chapter and Purdue’s NSAC team. Her commitment after graduation brought stability to Purdue’s NSAC program which earned them a fourth place finish in the country’s largest NSAC district competition.

Presidential Cup Award

The Allison Meadows Beggs Presidential Cup is presented to a member or company who has contributed the most to the organization over the past year. The 2015 Presidential Cup Award was presented to Scott Horton, creative director for Purdue University Hall of Music Productions. Horton was recognized for his passion and dedication to the organization over the past year.

In addition to the opportunity to enter work in the student ADDY awards competition, AAF‐NCI also offers a $500 scholarship for students studying advertising, marketing, communications, graphic design, or a related area.
